Lover. Lover.

"Loverboy (Extended Club Remix)" - Billy Ocean

Leslie Sebastian Charles - born in Trinidad and taking his new name from the Ocean Estate where he lived in London, Billy Ocean took the music world by storm in the mid-80's. The first track from the album, "Suddenly", was a #1 USA blockbuster called, "Caribbean Queen (No More Love On The Run)". This song is my favorite cut though and it peaked one place shy of the top spot on Billboard's Hot 100 in 1985. Later that same year Ocean performed at Live-Aid and won a Grammy for Best Male R&B Vocal Performance. He's planning to tour the UK next year and there's also work being done on a new LP. Not bad for a gardener who lives in Berkshire now. Runs: 8:06.

"Shame (Red Mix)" - The Motels

This was requested by a reader who alerted me to it's existence and I thought it was definitely worth tracking down. It's more of a dub mix but after listening to it I dig it enough to share it here. A big thanks go out to cispas at the Born Again 80's Forum for giving me this. Runs: 5:22.

We are but pilgrims...

"Rappin' Duke (Long Version)" - Rappin' Duke

No, John Wayne didn't rise from the grave in 1985. A rapper named Shawn Brown assumed his alias and recorded this insanity that has now resurfaced here. Play this tune and if the "Da-haa, Da Haaaaaaaa" isn't embedded in your brain until you scream for more Britney gossip, call Professor Charles Xavier. You might be a mutant. Running time: 6:05.

"Heart And Soul (Dance Mix)" - T'Pau

From the LP, "Bridge Of Spies", ("T'Pau" here in the USA) circa 1987. Vocalist Carol Decker led this band to a number 4 smash that year with this track. T'Pau: high-priestess on Star Trek and namesake of the band. The group split up in 1991 and reformed 7 years later featuring Decker and a new line-up. They continue to perform and record to this day. Noteworthy: The 45-single of "Heart And Soul" was an edit of the album, cutting to the chorus after the line, "when I lost your love, heart and soul", in the first verse. Running Time: 5:51.

Shock and Awe.

"Shame (Dance Mix)" - The Motels

A top-20 1985 hit for the band led by singer Martha Davis. This was also from the album, "Shock". Davis disbanded the group not long after this to try a solo career. It didn't work out quite the way she wanted it to though. She had a top-10 hit in Australia with, "Don't Tell Me The Time", but the song peaked at #80 here in the US in 1987. Flash-forward 20 years and The Motels are reunited with a new acoustic album of old hits and a new disc promised this year too.

(Back tomorrow with at least 2 more goodies, promise. Sorry there hasn't been more the last few days.)

Dee-dee-duh-duh.

"Rag Doll (Extended Vacation)" - Aerosmith

Originally titled, "Rag Time", this was the third single off the LP, "Permanent Vacation", in 1988. This album was the first time the band reached outside itself for material and it paid off for them commercially. The band's previous record was intended to be their big comeback but this one performed much better. In all it's sold over 5 million copies to date. Obviously (unless you were kidnapped by E.B.E.'s) you know that they are still rocking today and I heard that the next installment of "Guitar Hero" will be focused entirely on Aerosmith. This mix runs 7:17. That's all for today.

There is the sun and moon.

"Moonlighting (Extended Remix)" - Al Jarreau

Ah! The Blue Moon Detective Agency. The first 3 seasons are some of the finest television you'll ever see. Groundbreaking, witty, and a fantastic spoof of the detective genre. In all, it ran for 5 season on ABC from 1985-89 producing only 66 episodes. Production problems affected this show and many reruns were shown when shows weren't completed on time. That problem was addressed with humor in many episodes. There were also the conflicts between stars Cybill Shepherd and Bruce Willis. Producer Jay Daniel: "Well, I was the guy that more often than not would be the one that would go into the lions den when they were having disagreements. I'd sort of be the referee, try to resolve it so that we could get back to work. So there was that side of it. Everybody knows there was friction between the two of them on the stage. In the beginning, Bruce was just a guy’s guy. Let's just say he evolved. Over the years, he went from being the crew's best friend and just being grateful for the work and all of that to realizing that he was going to be a movie star and wanting to move on. Part of that was because of his strained relationship with Cybill. That sometimes made the set a very unpleasant place to be. Cybill -- I got along with her very well at times, other times I’d have to be the one who said you have to come out of the trailer and go to work. In fairness to her, she was in the makeup chair at six thirty in the morning with pages of dialogue she hadn’t seen before, she'd work very long hours, and then be back in the makeup chair at six thirty the next morning".

The show's theme song is presented here in it's maxi-single form and was written by Jarreau, produced by Nile Rogers and recorded and mixed by James Farber. Al Jarreau is a 7 time Grammy award winner known for the scat singing which is displayed prominently at the end of this remix. I bought this an import and I don't believe it ever had a US release. Running time is 4:17.
