Romancin' and dancin'

"Romancing The Stone (Extended Version)" - Eddy Grant
An even longer jam than the version on the LP, "Going For Broke", which was edited for the 7". Since the song barely even made an appearance in the movie it was commissioned for, I'm barely going to mention the movie here: "Romancing The Stone" starred Kathleen Turner, Michael Douglas and Danny DeVito about a big jewel. There. Now that that's out of the way let me say that it is a damn tragedy that the song only made it to #54 in 1984 on the Billboard Hot 100. I freaking love this song and Eddy Grant. The movie was ehhhh - but a box-office success. Had the song played a bigger part in it, it might have been better received. Silence! It does no good to ponder these things. Just enjoy the track here in it's 9 minute form.

Hello Uncle Mike - You know 1984/1985 is such a brilliant year for movies and music! Movie soundtracks and the pop chart were making our leisure activities and social life exciting as we have great films to watch and with them were the classic soundtracks! ROMANCING THE STONE and JEWEL OF THE NILE were such fun movies to watch (esp. Michael Douglas in those tight white pants LOL!) and the songs are fun too! When The Going Gets Tough (The Tough Gets Going)!

I confess I didn't really care for Stone or Jewel (Although Kathleen Turner was very sexy) but their themes were great 80's tunes. Thanks for writing!

I had the pleasure of speaking to Eddy Grant a few years ago, and we discussed his "Romancing The Stone" involvement. Apparently, the song was due for massive exposure/promotion around the time of the movie but, at the last minute, Michael Douglas (i should say here - allegedly) insisted it not be used. I think the guitar solo was used though? EG seemed quite bitter about this. However, I'm not entirely sure how MG can be blamed, as he was only an actor in the film - unless he had some kind of say? I know 20th Century Fox (after seeing a a rough cut)thought the film was going to flop. So much so, that they fired its' Director. This may have been the reason why Fox decided not to spend promo money on EGs song? Ironically, the film ended up being Fox's only hit that year! Still, a cracking tune :)
