How sweet and fitting it is

"In Dulce Decorum (Extended Mix)" - The Damned  
  
A poem written by Wilfred Owen in 1917 about World War 1 filled with gruesome imagery and condemnation of war, Dulce et Decorum Est, was the inspiration for this 1987 song. The final lines in Owen's poem were taken from another poem, Odes by Roman poet Horace, and included these words - Dulce et decorum est pro patria mori. Translated: How sweet and fitting it is to die for one's country.

I Damn Thee (insert obscure movie quote from The Jerk for stupid pun here) : The Damned were formed in 1976. In 1984 they performed on a little British show called The Young Ones (yay!). This song is from their '87 album Anything and was used in the Miami Vice (yippie!) third season episode, Walk Alone as well as featured on the Miami Vice II Soundtrack in it's shorter remixed and instrumental form. I never understood why it was played on the show with the vocals but not on the soundtrack. At any rate, this mix clocks in at 5:59.

"Sweet Freedom (Freedom Mix - Extended Club Version)" - Michael McDonald

Taken from the 1986 flick Running Scared starring Gregory Hines and Billy Crystal and Jimmy Smits (who got hacked up on Showtime's Dexter last year). McDonald was famously associated with the likes of Steely Dan and The Doobie Brothers before striking out on his own in 1982 (Remember I Keep Forgettin'? Ha! You see what I did there?) Michael has since smoked reunited with the Doobies many times and also as recently as 2006 with Steely Dan. This mix runs 10:05.

"Jeopardy (Dance Mix)" - Greg Kihn Band

The number 2 Billboard Hot 100 hit from early 1983 by the Greg Kihn Band in it's extended form is today's subject. It's from the band's 5th LP, Kihnspiracy. The video for this song's single version had the makings of a C-grade horror flick. Zombies (always a plus in my book), big tentacled monsters and burning skeletons. "Sussudio (Extended Version)" - Phil Collins

2 songs from a fantastic 80's album:
Born from an improvised lyric he thought up while diddling with his drum machine, "Sussudio" exploded on the charts the winter of 1985. '85 was a huge year for Collins due mostly to the success of the album this track is from, No Jacket Required. He also turned in a killer performance as a conman on the Miami Vice episode, "Phil The Shill" mostly opposite wannabe never-got-it-quite-right shiller, Izzie, played by Martin Ferrero. Collins also recorded  the number one song, "Separate Lives", with Marilyn Martin for the soundtrack to the movie "White Nights" starring Gregory Hines and Mikhail Baryshnikov.

 "Take Me Home (Extended Mix)" - Phil Collins

 This song is about a man in a mental institution so Collins says and was inspired by the movie "One Flew Over The Cuckoos Nest". Artists contributing background vocals on this track: Sting and Peter Gabriel. Sting also sang on the track "Long Way To Go" for the No Jacket Required disc and it along with this song were both featured on Miami Vice. I do remember this song being edited for radio to shorten it from its original LP version and this was the third version that was available to consumers in early 1986. Now go diddle a drum machine.

Cream Of Nowhere

Back from the world wide web graveyard at last! I have returned! Is anyone still here? So I couldn't resist the urge to come back here and post a few frightening cuts from some scary 80's artists (Robert Smith, I'm looking at you).





First up: The Cure - A Forest (Tree Mix)
The Cure's first and only single from 1980's Seventeen Seconds. Also the creepiest of all of their catalog as as far as I'm concerned. I'm also cheating a little bit because this mix was released by The Cure on 1990's Mixed Up (an album of galdanged ol' remixes) as opposed to being a 'fugee from the Eighties. Did I just type galdanged? This mix paints a dark, dreary landscape for me each time I listen to it probably due to the mood of being swept up in David Lynch's Twin Peaks on ABC at the time. Wow Bob Wow.

Ah, my favorite brain soup. Recorded for the soundtrack to The Return Of The Living Dead in 1985 by the horror-punk band The Cramps. Not much to say except love the movie, the song and the band. Send more paramedics!

"Lights Out (Extended Dance Mix)" - Peter Wolf

The 1st single off his 1st solo LP for the J. Giels Band's former singer. The song hit #12 on Billboard's Hot 100 and #11 on the Hot Dance Music/Club Play charts. TT: 6:17 and remixed by Francois Kevorkian. This song is not about failure to pay your monthly power bill.

Screams of terror

The Screams Of Passion (Extended Version) - The Family

Prince's first sign to his newly-formed Paisley Park Records in 1985. Edit: (Because I had a huge brainfart when I originally wrote this) The band featured Susannah Melvoin (Wendy's twin) and ex-Time members Jellybean Johnson, Jerome Benton and Paul Peterson. The band was led by Paul Peterson (renamed St. Paul for this project). Except for the track "River Run Dry", the band's debut LP was written and performed entirely by Prince. Melvoin's and St. Paul's vocals were added in later along with a few other tweaks. The Family dissolved after this record only to reunite in 2003 briefly and announced the recording of a new CD early last year. This version runs 6:48 and is not about screaming from a kidney stone.
