"Do It For Love (Extended Dance Mix) - Sheena Easton

Nile Rogers (of Chic fame) produced the 1985 album, "Do You", for Sheena Easton. Rogers' previous work included production for David Bowie, Duran Duran, Madonna and Debbie Harry. Despite all this, the album's sales were disappointing when stacked against '84's, "A Private Heaven", her platinum selling album and collaboration with Prince. This song barely cracked the top 40. The next 2 singles were a blip on the hot 100 ("Jimmy Mack" and "Magic Of Love") . Sheena's still touring right now and unlike Britney Spears her kids are her priority. And she has a fully functional brain.

"The Sun Always Shines On TV (Extended Remix)" - a-ha

This was a fairly accurate song in the mid-eighties. "The Wire" wasn't airing then. "Miami Vice" was and it was fairly gritty but the clothes were pretty bright. Britney wasn't on TV either.

"Someday (Extended Remix)" - Glass Tiger

Trivia:

This band was originally called Tokyo but they're from Canada. Notes: From '86's, "The Thin Red Line", produced by Jim Vallance. Vallance was Bryan Adams' songwriting partner and Adams provided backing vocals on another track from the LP you might have heard by them, "Don't Forget Me When I'm Gone". They received a Grammy nomination for Best New Artist that year also. Where are they now?: Word has it they have a new album coming out sometime soon and toured a lot last year. Leave Britney alone?: Okay. For now.

In 1986 the 2nd single from her 2nd LP, "True Colors", peaked at number 3. Life's funny ain't it? Listen for The Bangles backing up Cyn on this tune presented here in it's extended glory.

"Let's Go (Shep's Mix)" - Wang Chung

All so you can Wang Chung tonight. There are rumors The Wangers are going to reunite again sometime this year at a venue somewhere on this planet. "Communication (Extended Mix)" - The Power Station

Man, what a record this was! This band was rockin'. The Power Station was born during a break from Duran Duran's schedule and was named for the place it was recorded at in New York City (now called Avatar Studios) . Before Robert Palmer, the rest of the band - John and Andy Taylor and Tony Thompson - approached Mick Jagger, Billy Idol, Mars Williams, Richard Butler, and Mick Ronson about being the frontman. This is the first track they recorded together as a group and it inspired them to do an entire LP. Sadly, Palmer and Thompson both died in 2003. I couldn't see any of the other guys mentioned as a singer and Tony Thompson beat the ever-loving crap outta those drums. Rest in peace, guys.

Nothing fancy about this remix by one of the greatest bands of the 80's. Just a nice long jam to an excellent song.

"Never As Good As The First Time (Extended Remix)" - Sade

This song was remixed and edited from the LP, "Promise" for radio airplay and the 7" single. Here's the longer version of that mix.

"Crazy In The Night [Barking At Airplanes] (Dance Mix)" - Kim Carnes

Not your usual Kim Carnes track. This song always makes me think of the classic Monty Python Lumberjack bit. Excellent track for Halloween compilations as well.

"Talk To Me (Extended Remix)" - Chico DeBarge
"Who's Johnny [Short Circuit Theme] (Extended Remix)" - El DeBarge

After DeBarge released a greatest hits album in '86, El split for a solo career. "Who's Johnny" is the sum total success of that endeavor. Last year he was arrested on domestic violence charges and stayed in jail due to numerous outstanding warrants for drugs, vandalism, and driving with a suspended license. No bail for El. Who the hell is El? Hand him the "I wanted a solo career but all I got was this lousy prison cell" shirt.

Chico, while never a member of the family band, was not arrested last year. No, no. He was arrested twenty years ago. For...now look at the pics of both these guys before I say it...drug charges. Can you see these guys slingin' on the corner? Finally, ol' Chico is a deadbeat dad who doesn't pay his child support according to his soon to be ex-wife. "Talk To Me" reached the top 20 in February of 1987 while I believe Chico heard that lonesome whistle blowin' in the pen.

"Along Comes A Woman (Dance Mix)" - Chicago

Okay. I heard this mix one time on a local radio station and never heard it again. Over a decade later I saw the maxi-single up for grabs on ebay. I lost. Searched high and low ever since. No luck. I go onto the Born Again 80's Forum ( http://bornagain80s.buygoo.net/ ) for the very first time. Ask about it. Within a couple hours it's uploaded for me by a user there named musicman2. How cool is that?


The 7" single remix for this song cut the second verse. It's back in this version. These next 2 also came from the forum and I never even knew they existed.






"Don't Dream It's Over (Extended Mix)" - Crowded House
The #2 smash from 1987 has an extended mix. Took me 21 years to discover that.

"Midnight Blue (Extended Remix)" - Lou Gramm
Gramm's on-again, off-again relationship that continues to this day with Foreigner began here. This made it into the top-5 in '87 also. I'm loving this version.

I DO want to drag up the past...

"What About Love (Extended Version)" - Heart

Finally, an update. Heart used to perform this version in concert. I remember hearing it on the King Biscuit Flower Hour not long after this single hit the radio in 1985. The self-titled LP this song came from sold over 5 milion copies. Did they sellout to mainstream pop? Most likely. I didn't care then and I still don't.

Personal sidenote: If anyone has the extended remix of "Nothin' At All", please let me know.


"Swept Away (Extended Mix)" - Diana Ross

Written by Daryl Hall of Hall & Oates. Those guys were unstoppable in the 80's. He also plays guitar and provides backup vocals. "Missing You" was the bigger hit from this album, but this is certainly the one I favor.

"That Was Yesterday (Extended Remix)" - Foreigner

From the "Agent Provacateur" LP. This wasn't their biggest selling album (see "4" ) but it did give the group their biggest single , "I Want To Know What Love Is". This song peaked at number 12 on the U.S. charts. Cool remix.

"Don't You [Forget About Me] (Extended Version)" - Simple Minds

From "The Breakfast Club" soundtrack. The movie brought in about $46 million but the memories are worth far more than that. I recently watched it again and thought it holds up quite nicely. Angst is always angst, teenage or otherwise. Download "Don't You (Forget About Me)" new link

"Nightshift (Extended Remix)" - The Commodores

In 1985, The Commodores released this album and the title track in memory of Jackie Wilson ("Lonely Teardrops") and Marvin Gaye ("Sexual Healing") - who both died the year before. Singer J.D. Nicholas was brought in to replace Lionel Richie who had already left the band three years earlier. The song's writer and original band member, Clyde Orange stepped up to do vocals on this track also. The song earned the group a Grammy later that year for Best R&B

"And She Was (Extended Mix)" - Talking Heads
An Eric "ET" Thorngren remix from '85's "Little Creatures". Lead singer David Byrne has been quoted as saying that the songs on this album are "very conventional songs, except probably the words are a little unusual". The same could be said of every album by the Talking Heads. Not hating, just saying.

One for the soundtrack lover in you from 1985. Taylor also helped write the score for this movie. And he was in Duran Duran. And a member of The Power Station. All in the same year.

"I Wanna Hear It From Your Lips (Extended Remix) - Eric Carmen

Before "Hungry Eyes" and after "All By Myself", Carmen released the pictured self-titled solo LP, circa 1985. This song barely broke the top 40 but it has a place in my collection after all this time.

This was the first song I ever heard by Madame Bush and still my favorite. I have a live version featuring David Gilmour on lead guitar from "The Secret Policeman's Ball" benefit concert that I'll try to find at another date to post here as well.

Good remix of a great song.

"When Your Heart Is Weak (Extended Remix)" - Cock Robin

Obvious jokes could be made as to the band's name but it's in reference to a 17th century story entitled "The Marriage of Cock Robin and Jenny Wren". What-evah. France, Germany, Italy and the Netherlands were all more kind to this band than the good old U.S. of A.

I really dug this song in '85 and I still do. Simply overjoyed when I discovered the 12" single at my local Peaches waaaayy back. Peter Kingsbery sounds like a cross between Bob Dylan ( the huhh-huyuh's he does in this) and Bryan Ferry. It works.

Top 20 hit for the member of Fleetwood Mac in '84. The regular cut of this song was featured in the Miami Vice episode, "The Great McCarthy".

"Go Home (Special 12 Inch Version)" - Stevie Wonder

This one just screams the 80's. Personal favorite. From 1985's, "In Square Circle".
